When it comes to transportation and logistics, optimizing space is essential to reduce costs and ensure efficiency in the supply chain. One of the most common questions asked by exporters and importers is: How many pallets can really fit in a container?
Types of containers
First, it’s important to know the standard sizes of containers used in international transport:
- 20-foot container (TEU – Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit): The most common for small shipments.
- Interior dimensions: 5.9 m long x 2.35 m wide x 2.39 m high.
- 40-foot container: Ideal for larger or consolidated loads.
- Interior dimensions: 12 m long x 2.35 m wide x 2.39 m high.
Types of pallets
Pallets also come in different sizes, with the most common being:
- European pallet (EUR/EPAL): 1.2 m long x 0.8 m wide.
- American pallet: 1.2 m long x 1.0 m wide.
Container capacity
Depending on the type of pallet and load configuration, container capacity varies:
- 20-foot container:
- European pallets: Between 10-11 pallets.
- American pallets: Approximately 9 pallets.
- 40-foot container:
- European pallets: Up to 24-25 pallets.
- American pallets: Approximately 20 pallets.
Factors to consider
- Load height: Although these calculations consider only the surface area, the height of the pallet also affects the total capacity. Stackable pallets allow for better use of space.
- Weight: Make sure not to exceed the weight limits allowed by the container.
- Load distribution: Poor distribution can affect the stability of the load and create risks during transport.
